Areas of Practice
We live in a culture that is at war with our youth. Each day, boys and girls are presented with information that directly impacts their understanding and view of themselves and others. Coming alongside young men and helping them understand the complex and often confusing world in which they live is a deep passion and gift of mine.
I believe it is critical for a young man to learn how to identify and appropriately express what he is feeling. Additionally, it is equally important that he is able to understand how he thinks and processes thoughts. Unfortunately, our society in many ways punishes men for showing emotion and minimal resources are available to effectively teach them how to understand their cognitive processes. As a result, an increasing amount of adolescent and teenage boys are expressing themselves in a multitude of unhealthy ways. I find it a great honor to sit and converse with these young men.
Alcohol and drug assessments
Adolescent substance abuse is an area that we, as a society, are struggling greatly to get out in front of. Each year, more and more young people are losing touch with their goals and dreams due to what many see as “normal teenage behavior.” The amount of time that it takes for a young person to become dependent upon substances is much shorter than it used to be. For this reason, it’s critical to be able to accurately identify what role alcohol and drug abuse is playing in the struggling young person. The very nature of substance abuse is often times deceptive and subtle. And many teens using drugs have tremendous abilities in keeping this unhealthy behavior under the radar. My professional background and experience has given me a keen understanding in this area - not only working to support the adolescent, but giving the parents understanding and coaching as well.
Families
It is my belief that the healthier the family unit is, the healthier the community as a whole will be. I desire to engage families in a way that emphasizes each member’s value, voice, and needs. Some family issues that I work with include but are not limited to:
Effective Parenting
Family Transitions
Substance Use
Sibling Relationships
Effective Communication
Boundaries
